GAS-ASSISTED INJECTION MOLDING

Gas-assisted Injection Molding Technology

By fully exploiting the ability of gas to transmit pressure uniformly and effectively, it breaks through the limitations of traditional injection molding, molding integral thick/thin-wall plastic parts in one shot, and brings a series of benefits such as weight reduction, cost saving, less warpage and lower clamp force.

PRINCIPLE

Process Principle & Advantages

Stage 1 · Plastic Injection

Melt enters the cavity and, meeting the cooler mold wall, forms a relatively thin solidified layer.

Stage 2 · Gas Injection

Inert gas enters the molten plastic, pushing the unsolidified center material into cavities not yet filled.

Stage 3 · End of Gas Injection

Gas continues to push the melt flow until the melt fills the entire cavity.

Stage 4/5 · Holding & Exhaust

Gas in the channel compresses the melt for compensation to ensure appearance; before mold opening, gas is exhausted, pressure drops to atmospheric.

Seven Advantages of Gas-assisted Molding

  • Can mold thick/thin-wall integral parts difficult for traditional injection
  • Eliminates sink marks on thick sections, improving surface quality
  • Reduces residual internal stress after demolding, less warpage, higher part strength
  • Shortens molding cycle, improves production efficiency
  • Reduces part weight, saves material, significantly cutting cost while maintaining quality
  • Requires lower injection pressure and clamp force, greatly reducing demands on machine and mold
  • Improves material distribution across the section, improving part rigidity
APPLICATIONS

Application Categories

Gas-assisted injection can be applied to almost any thermoplastic (except very soft plastics) and some thermosets, roughly divided into three categories by part structure.

A

Bar-type Parts

Large thick-wall parts such as handles, usually using hollow-injection gas-assisted process where gas penetrates the entire wall to form a channel. Design centers on the channel: near-circular cross-section, avoid sharp corners, length > 5× section height, inlet near gate with distance >30mm.

B

Panel-type Parts

Large flat parts prone to warpage and local surface shrinkage. Ribs are often used as channels, placed at edges or wall corners; avoid thin dense ribs to prevent the "fingering" effect; channels distributed evenly and extended to the ends.

C

Special Parts

Parts with locally thicker sections where conventional methods easily cause sink marks, voids or distortion — adding a proper gas inlet at that location uses gas for molding and holding to avoid these defects.

SYSTEM & EQUIPMENT

Gas-assisted Molding Equipment System

A complete GAIM system consists of three parts: A high-pressure nitrogen source equipment, B high-pressure nitrogen transfer pipeline, and C gas-assisted pressure controller.

A · Clean Compressed Air System

Includes imported screw air compressor, accumulative freeze dryer, filters — integrated design. After filtration, particle accuracy ≤0.01μm, oil removal ≤0.001mg/m³. Simple system, stable reliable quality, multi-point protection alarm.

B · Low-pressure Nitrogen Generator

PSA pressure-swing adsorption nitrogen unit using carbon molecular sieve dual-tower adsorption to extract high-purity nitrogen — large capacity, high purity, low noise. Widely used in aerospace, nuclear power, food & pharma, electronics, defense and special fields.

High-pressure Nitrogen Compressor (Diaphragm)

Diaphragm compression is a notably clean method of gas compression, essentially avoiding secondary contamination — used for flammable, explosive, toxic gases and high-pressure oxygen compression. Diaphragm compression in GAIM protects the sensitivity of the pressure controller, of great significance to product quality assurance.

C · High-precision Gas Pressure Controller

The GPC series core components are all imported, consisting of pressure reducer, proportional solenoid valve, high-pressure servo valve, safety valve, etc. Fully Chinese interface, simultaneously displays set and actual gas-pressure-time curves, graded independent real-time correction, freely movable unit.
